Alex Friedman (Co-Founder)

Alex has enjoyed tutoring math, science, and other technical topics since he was a teenager at Stuyvesant High School.

He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northeastern University, worked as a Researcher at Carnegie Mellon, and did a brief stint as a technology consultant before leaving the corporate and academic worlds to tutor full time.

Having worked with kids, adults, and everyone in between, he came to see that math-phobia, uncertainty, and boredom – not a lack of innate talent – keeps most students from succeeding.

Stephanie Brandon

Stephanie graduated from Yale University with a BA in Psychology. During her senior year at Yale, Stephanie independently founded an SAT prep class for underprivileged students at a local New Haven high school, thus sparking her passion for education.

Since then, Stephanie has accumulated over nine years of experience tutoring students ranging in age from elementary school to college not only in test prep—ACT, SAT—but a variety of academic subjects as well (math, chemistry, physics, biology, psychology, English—reading and writing—Spanish, and history). She is also trained in the Orton Gillingham technique for giving students with dyslexia tools to learn to read and write.

In harmony with this content-based study, Stephanie also works with students on their executive functioning skills. In her role as an executive functioning coach, she focuses on teaching students self-management techniques that will develop the skills to maintain focus and productivity, organize time and schedules, plan and prioritize tasks, as well as manage emotions and impulses. This training has allowed Stephanie to take a very personalized approach with her students and help each one become a more effective learner as well as prepare them for long term success.

When not tutoring students Stephanie loves to travel, read, and belt out Celine Dion hits at any karaoke opportunity!

Gabrielle Hoyt

Gabrielle graduated Yale University in 2015 with a double major in English and Theater Studies, winning both English Department and Senior Thesis prizes; during that time, she also spent a year working for the Yale Admissions Office. After college, Gabrielle lived in Washington, DC, where she served in the artistic department of a regional theater. She’s now returned to Yale, where she’s pursuing an MFA/PhD in Dramaturgy & Dramatic Criticism at the Drama School. In her professional life, Gabrielle has taught learners of all ages in lectures, seminars, and one-on-ones. As a tutor, she specializes in college essays, counseling, writing, and SAT/ACT prep, but has worked with students on a wide variety of subjects. Last year, students she taught matriculated at schools including Stanford, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon, and the University of Virginia. A deep believer in holistic engagement, Gabrielle meets each student, and each family, where they are, and works to individualize her teaching to their needs. In her spare time, Gabrielle loves running, dogs, musical theater soundtracks, sampling perfumes, and supernatural TV shows.

Daniel Friedman

Daniel was basically born in school—his parents are both English professors—and has never really left! He went to the University of Texas in Austin (his hometown), where he majored in English and French literature and Chinese language, alongside minoring in neuroscience. After completing three honors theses and being named a Dean’s Distinguished Graduate, he attended and graduated from Yale Law School, before getting an MA in Sinology from the University of London. He then moved to California (where he passed the bar exam to become a licensed attorney) to begin a PhD in Chinese History at UC Berkeley, where he is currently a doctoral candidate. His research focuses on the role of law in theories of political legitimacy in early imperial and medieval Chinese texts.

Daniel has been teaching for nearly 20 years, beginning with the martial arts classes he ran as a teenager. That early interest continued: he helped to found and (for several years) run a martial arts school in Austin and still teaches kicks, punches, and takedowns at every opportunity. He has also worked as a private tutor for 6 years, and a college instructor for 3, during which time he has designed and taught his own college writing seminar. He loves teaching a wide variety of humanities subjects, from poetry to law to history to (especially) classical Chinese.

When not teaching or writing, Daniel continues his lifelong hunt for great bubble tea and tries to take pictures of his daughter that will make his wife laugh.

Nolan Reece

Nolan graduated from Bard College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics.

He has worked for the Bard Prison Initiative for three years, where he designed and taught High School Equivalency classes in Math, Science, Social Studies, and Writing. He’s also worked as a tutor for over 6 years, with students from the 3rd grade through college. He has years of experience tutoring HS math, Calculus I and II, Physics, General Chemistry and Biology, as well as for the ACT, SAT, and SHSAT exams.

Nolan believes that one-on-one tutoring is unique and effective because it requires students to think about details, ask questions, and engage in discussion of their ideas. It creates space for the undivided attention of the teacher and meaningful affirmation of the student’s practice.

In his free time, Nolan enjoys playing basketball, swimming, and learning to draw. He loves working towards long trips, which has included journeys across China, America, Turkey, Lebanon, Portugal, and Ireland.
