Frequently Asked Questions

Sessions

How long are sessions?

Studies and research suggest that the most productive session length is 52 minutes.

Session length varies by student: some need more, some less. We recommend starting with one-hour sessions and then reevaluating based on the student’s needs.

How much do sessions cost?

Session rates vary based on tutor and subject.

Are sessions online on in person?

Most of our sessions take place over Zoom. However, some of our tutors do travel to families’ homes or public locations for lessons.

Do you tutor groups?

We have found that one-on-one tutoring provides the most effective learning experience for the student. When there are multiple students in a lesson, the tutor must divide their time among them and it diminishes the quality of attention they can give to each student.

However, we do offer small group lessons of up to three students, and many of our clients have found this an effective approach.

Do tutors give homework?

The tutor and parent will discuss what additional homework might be assigned. For test prep, additional homework is usually vital; for academic subjects, less so.

We believe that homework should always be of high quality, not necessarily high quantity, so any additional work will be tailored to the exact needs of the student. We do not assign “busy work”.

Tutors

How do you choose tutors?

Our tutors go through a rigorous interview process and must prove their mastery of any material they wish to teach.

When we interview, we look not only at a tutor’s own understanding, but at how clearly and effectively they can communicate it to a student. We search for  dynamic, fun, charismatic tutors who will connect well with their students and make the learning process as easy as possible.

How are students matched with tutors?

We match tutors with students based on both personality and experience. In our view, finding a good match the most important part of the process so that the student can feel motivated and at ease.

Can I request a specific tutor?

You absolutely can! If you see someone on our team page you like, we’re happy to reach out to them and see if they have slots available.

What if the tutor is not a good fit?

If for any reason you feel a tutor is not a good match for your student, please let us know so that we can find someone who will create an easy, collaborative connection. Our goal is always to make sure that you and your student get the most out of your tutoring experience.
